This year, Boar Hunt will be inspired by German Criskindtmarkt! The pre-Christian roots for these festive markets were the winter markets in the 1300’s where people stocked up for the cold season. They sold food, clothing, tools, and basic supplies needed to survive winter. In the late Middle Ages (into the 1400s–1500s,) they aligned with the Advent season and so people started buying toys, baked goods and decorations. In the 16th century, they became known as “Christkindlmarkt” or “Christ Child market.” This coincided with the protestant reformation. Since these markets have such a wide historical window, we invite attendees to play in all four centuries! Perhaps we will have both Saint Nicholas and Krampus sightings!
Boar Hunt is a ‘fighting event.’ Mostly. With a feast in the afternoon/evening for all in attendance. The heavy armored combatant select one of their number to serve as a ‘boar’ and the rapier combatants select a ‘stag.’ Both the boar and stag are let loose around Camp Herms while the ‘hunters’ try to dispatch it. Additionally, non-combatant attendees can serve as ‘dogs’ onthe hunt! While dogs don’t fight or talk, they help locate the boar and stag for the hunters with pointing and barking. Is it silly? Maybe. Is it fun? Well, the hunt has been going on for 20+ years, so ‘yes?’
